Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who watches the watchers?)
The uncanny sensation induced by eyes which appear to follow the viewer, the psychological suggestion of surveillance and its relationship to notions of trust in conjunction with the idea of an absent presence held within the painted portrait are all addressed by this body of work. The eyes in the portrait do not seek to connect with the viewer; they merely reflect the visualization of the artist who, although remains unknown and unseen, is always present. This notion is simultaneously disturbing and reassuring.
