I work from my home studio in Glenmuick, a small highland glen in Scotland’s
Cairngorms National Park. Inspired by a romantic sense of North, I make embroidered artworks which are overtly minimal, serene and quietly contemplative. Referencing the poetics of colour and space, often exploring words or lines from a half remembered song or story, simplicity is at the heart of my work.
Having lost my hearing after a viral infection a few years ago, my world became silent and insular, I try to convey the silence in each and every piece I make. The white hare, present in much of my work, is an analogy for the adaptability and change required in order to survive.
Each piece begins in my Sketchbook or my iPad, I then paint artists canvas before layering with millions of tiny stitches, using just the needle, thread and straight stitch on my domestic sewing machine. Changes can happen during the making, one of the joys of working freehand. I have been stitching in this way for many years, mastering the technique whilst paring down the process, each unique finished piece records my movements as the maker and not the automation of the machine.
I studied Fine Art at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen and have both an Honours and a Masters degree from my time there.
I have work available in Galleries, Online and regularly exhibit in curated exhibitions
